How to Replace a Short Bathroom Door with a Taller One

Back in the late 1700’s it was not uncommon to have short doors, the bath door was 5′ 8″. I raised the opening and created a rough opening of 6’3″.

The normal height for today’s doors are 80″ (6’6″). I purchased one that is hollow and needed to remove 5 inches. since these doors only have a small strip of wood glued in place I was able to remove the strip and re-glue it giving me the size I needed.

I was concerned about the strip of wood coming off the two panels, however it was not a very strong bond to the outer skins and it was easy to reuse. Now that it’s been replaced with a taller door it’s much better.
